You heard right, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to windows 10 for all windows 7/8 users within the first year of launch. There is not a launch date for windows 10 yet, but we’ll find out more as 2015 progresses. Now, should you upgrade? That’s a tough question and honestly I think it depends. If you’re running windows 7 I don’t think I would recommend upgrading for a couple of reasons:
- Windows 7 is the last true non-tablet version of windows. New versions of windows are quite hard to learn because they are based of a touch screen interface, even if you only have a mouse. I don’t think they’re doing away with this in windows 10.
- Windows 7 is stable, it works well with programs and is still being maintained by Microsoft. When windows 10 releases it is likely to have many issues which could take a year or two to figure out.
- There are still a lot of unknowns at the moment, once we get more information we will know if it is worth it in the end.
If you are running windows 8 I don’t think you should upgrade immediately, but you might want to upgrade before the end of the year and here’s why:
- When windows 8 first launched few users liked the new tablet-like features and it had a lot of issues. Now windows 8 is more stable, but it still has strong tablet like features that take away from the ease of use for a computer.
- Windows 8 uses more processing power than is necessary. I don’t know that windows 10 will be any better, but they have placed it as primarily a computer based operating system.
*edit*
Windows 10 upgrade will be free for a year after it is released. With windows 10 being the last operating system I think it would be worth it to upgrade to windows 10 before that year is up and you have to buy it.
